i always share vintage finds that are listed in the shop, but i thought i'd post a few things i've unearthed and charmed by enough to keep them for myself. i'm a collector after all. i found this minnesota twins matchbook at a juicy estate sale last weekend south of the twin cities.

i love this because:

i'm a twins fan (of course). things with a regional connection are always a little bit nostalgic. it means more to me than it would to someone in rhode island with no ties to the upper midwest. but it might mean more to a baseball collector in a different way than it does to me.

it's also in such good shape. the cardboard is stiff, there aren't any creases and only a little surface wear. plus the matches are still inside, which completes the package. i actually love that two matches were used - in that way, i can tell it wasn't found with 100 others fresh out of the box, it was actually saved and preserved by an actual baseball fan. that makes it a little more unique to me.

another plus is that i know what year it is from: the 1970 home game schedule is printed on the inside. often you can't accurately date an item without in depth research.

lastly, i love it because it's a little piece of american advertising. vintage matchbooks are easy to find because everybody printed them back in the day. matchbooks were better than business cards because smoking was the norm. easy advertising.

who knows, maybe it'll end up in the shop someday. (that's the beauty of having your own vintage shop.) but most likely it'll be a part of my personal collection for quite some time.

the folks at chance turned me on to vintage new yorker covers, but since i'm not a subscriber i don't have access to the magazine's archive. however, i did find the entire span of covers in this gallery at cover browser. it's fascinating to explore history and culture through all the different styles and genres of the cover art. cannot stop trolling this archive! i'm going back in for more.

fresh finds are up in the vintage shop! one of my favorites is this set of vintage air mail envelopes in the original box. these would be charming for invitations (with vintage stamps!) or for every day snail mail. and the packaging is lovely, too.

resolutions

do you make new year's resolutions? i tend to make only a couple so not to bite off more than i can chew. i wonder how woody guthrie did with his long list in 1942. i'm really just going for anthony burrill's advice:

thinking deep questions as the new year rings and i am begrudgingly evaluating last year's resolutions and contemplating my goals for 2012. namely, what am i doing? with my life, with my work. with my lifework. this year, my resolutions really revolve around this little blog/business venture. one of them is to work through these efforts on the blog. it's a spot for pretty things, but i think if i have more small business posts it will be more motivating for me (and hopefully for a few others, too).

happiest new year! we had a busy christmas week and rang in 2012 by toasting champagne in mismatched cups with friends. lots of food and family this past week, too many presents and a mini-snow storm. i'm actually a little glad to get back to our regular schedule.

i don't normally post about jewelry, but these pieces from the vamoose are so intriguing. using natural stone like marble, chrysoprase, quartz, riverstone, feldspar, lava stone and jaspar with metal and brass, kathryn blackmore makes her collections for the vamoose by hand. the geometric marble necklace is particularly lovely without being too delicate.

wish list: faribault blanket

i was bummed when the historic faribault woolen mill closed in 2009, especially since it was only a day trip away and i'd never visited. but they've reopened this fall and are now one of the only fully integrated, working woolen mills in north america. since 1865 the faribault woolen mill played a part in history, producing half the wool blankets in the united states (along with being the oldest manufacturing entity in minnesota). ellen showed me a trapper scarf in person today and i quite literally gasped. quality craftsmanship, indeed! i'm adding the lodge stripe throw to my christmas list this year. i feel like the world is a better place now that they're back in business (and doing it right).

plus, for each blanket purchased in december faribault woolen mill will donate a blanket to twin cities shelters.

a very interesting specimen

i'm completely charmed by these antique botanical cyanotypes from a recent show at ampersand titled from the winter woods. circa 1900, they're mysterious, a little sad and very magical. ampersand says it best:

"the photographer who made these images was not only skilled with the mechanics of the camera & the chemistry of printing, he or she also had an advanced eye for the subtleties of arrangement. looking closely, one sees specimen pins, drops of water cupped in leaves & a butterfly poised upon a blossom, small details that suggest an intent beyond a mere record of plant species."

baby shower for arrow

here are some snaps from abby's baby shower i threw at my place a couple weeks ago. i was excited to help welcome baby arrow (who's due anytime now). what a day!

the weather was beautiful for early october, so we had food, drinks and gifts outside on the patio. we had a potluck, fun decorations and an arrow making activity in lieu of games. guests addressed envelopes (for easy thank you notes after) which were then drawn for little prizes. leftover craspedia in vintage milk glass vases, fantastic cookies by my friend brian for dessert, beautiful joia sodas and cucumber water for thirst quenching, and favors with deluxe chocolate bars and d.i.y memo clips served as a going away treat. i thought it turned out pretty darn cute!

today's release from the working proof is a cool piece by sasha prood. after a visit to her personal portfolio, i had to share her typography designs with watercolor. i love the juxtaposition of a medium that is usually flowing and loose with the constrains of sharp edges and hard lines of typography and geometric patterns. get the chevron repeat print at the working proof (15% of each sale goes to charity).

what do you think about braided rugs? in a lot of places they look too dated, though some part of me still likes them out of nostalgia. but if done right, they can still make a room. recently, i inherited a big neutral toned braided rug and was skeptical at first, but have really found that it's softened up a room that i was having a hard time "settling" since renovating our little house. as the dude says, it really ties the room together, man.

have you heard of the project called the burning house? people from around the world submit a photo of their answer to one question: if your house was burning, what would you take with you? i love how each photo is literally a snapshot of each person's life and priorities.

i submitted a photo yesterday - i'll let you know if it gets posted. i have to say walking around my house, taking inventory of all my stuff, was a sobering experience. i wouldn't need much of anything. of course there were a handful of items i'd be crushed if i never saw again, but all in all things can be replaced. i highly recommend this exercise: physically taking what you would need and putting them together in a pile. what would you grab? you might find you're more practical rather than sentimental or vice versa.

vintage camera collection

a bit of shameless self promotion here, but i was noticing i've amassed a little camera collection in the vintage shop lately. some are retro and funny like the kodak pleaser and colorburst, and some are really cool and antique - i.e. the imperial and beacon. because of this i've added a new shop section to keep them all together.

what do you collect? i've got too many collections to be honest, but lately i've been into bowling trophies and japanese stoneware.

i first discovered sabrina ward harrison's work via her first book at a very pivotal time in my own young life - the last years of high school - and followed her career all throughout college. her approach to art and life profoundly affected my own, and along with many of her readers, taught me a lot about how life is messy and that's okay. i still often need to be reminded to slow down and put things into perspective like she does through her beautiful mixed media work and vulnerable writing.

sabrina's silver lake house tour was posted on apartment therapy today and it's everything you'd imagine. if you're familiar with her it won't surprise you that her self proclaimed "fort style" home is colorful and delightfully hodge-podge - she says you should "create spaces you truly love to be in." while my style certainly differs, it's refreshing to see a live/work space that isn't perfectly put together.

i especially love the confetti on her front steps and the long written piece draped down her hallway ceiling.

happy tuesday! i took a mini-hiatus from the blog to do some swimming up north at an annual trip to the cabin with my best pals. lots of sun and fun and food! i also finished reading the help and can't wait to see the movie this weekend!

back to our regularly scheduled programming: fantastic industrial light fixtures look so sharp with neon cloth cords. earthseawarrior has a great eye for doing modern/antique mash ups. i love the unexpected pop of color!

i'm enamored by this series of photographs called any other name by erin tyner. the black background lends a mature quality to these pretty specimens. the floral photography genre is often over done and not well executed, but these are a departure from the "calender page" format. more specimens to see at her erin tyner photography.

the latest issue of covet garden hit the webstands this morning. i love the featured home of tara and terry - the buttery yellow is so perfect with all the warm wood, black ceiling and bark print wallpaper. i have a crush on that couch and might have that blue be inspiration for painting our bedroom. and the sliding barn door in the kitchen? fantastic. check out the full issue of covet garden here.

smilebooth has been the shit for the past few years and rightly so. a fantastic concept that's customizable and gives an event an extra wow factor. the honeycomb collective is doing a wedding at the end of the month (it's going to be awesome!) so i'm gathering ideas for something similar there. love these installations by smilebooth, especially the grey crepe paper backdrop above.

it's so funny what trends come back around, but maybe friendship bracelets never really left. considerably tween turned young at heart, friendship bracelets are so fun for summer. we found a few in mexico that i want to get the pattern for (they're round and really cool). check out honestly wtf's tutorial on these diy friendship bracelets in the mean time.

playa del carmen

wish i was still at the beach! here are a few shots from playa del carmen and cozumel, mexico. had a great time and crossed off "swim in the ocean" on my to-do before i turn 30 list. lots of reading, swimming and eating fresh shrimp and ceviche with good friends. now back to reality.

vintage book review | 50s mn tourism booklet

as a collector of vintage books and ephemera, i love old photography and design. case in point, this tourism booklet from the 1950s. touting minnesota as ultimate vacation land, the lithographed book has great style and a little kitsch. because i grew up not far from itasca state park, i especially like the photo of the gang at the headwaters of the mississippi (fourth from the top). and astrology must've been all the rage back then - would the tourism board incorporate that into their vacation brochures today?

plus: this reminds me of kodachromes.

speaking of the northcountry - i'm heading up for my 10 year high school class reunion today. has it really been that long? i can't believe it. how about you? did you go to your reunions - high school or otherwise?

maybe 1000 posts doesn't sound like many, but it seems like a good milestone to me. instead of carry on as usual today, i did a little blog reflecting and sifted through my archives (going back to 2007). what a trip down memory lane! my style and perspective have definitely changed (or evolved -i hope) over the past four and a half years. a little embarrassing to look back at when i first started (posts are super wonky since the format change, pictures have disappeared, terrible photography, links are dead, etc. etc.) but also fun to see the progress and rediscover some gems. it is so hard to choose but here are a few of the things i like the best from pinkshirtsandcarwrecks history. perhaps you'll find something new to you. thanks for reading my little blog along the way! i can't tell you enough how much i appreciate your support.
